Top 5 Things to Pack in Your Hospital Bag (from a Doula’s Perspective)
Packing your hospital bag can feel overwhelming. Do you really need three different outfits for baby? What about a birthing ball? As a doula, I’ve seen many families bring way too much (or miss the items they actually needed most).
Here are my top 5 must-haves for your hospital bag:
1. Comfort Items for You
Labour is physical and emotional, and comfort makes a big difference. Think about small things that help you feel grounded, such as:
Your own pillow or cozy blanket (hospital ones aren’t always great!)
Lip balm (the air in hospitals is dry)
Hair ties or headbands
Slippers or warm socks
2. Snacks and Drinks
Hospital food doesn’t always come when you need it. Having your own snacks means you and your partner can keep your energy up. Choose things that are:
Easy to eat one-handed (granola bars, trail mix, fruit leather)
Hydrating (electrolyte drinks, coconut water)
Comforting (a favourite treat can do wonders emotionally, too)
3. Birth Tools and Support Items
You don’t need to pack an entire toolkit — but a few simple items go a long way:
Massage tools or a tennis ball for back pressure
A water bottle with a straw (so you can sip easily during labour)
Essential oils (if you like them — lavender or peppermint are common choices)
A portable speaker for your calming playlist
4. Clothing for After Baby
Comfort is key. Skip the fancy outfits and choose things that are:
Loose, soft, and nursing-friendly (if you plan to breastfeed)
Easy to move in (think leggings, nightgowns, oversized T-shirts)
Flip-flops or easy slip-on shoes for walking around
For baby, just bring:
A couple of sleepers
A going-home outfit
A hat and blanket (season depending)
5. Important Documents and Personal Essentials
This one is less glamorous, but it’s crucial. Don’t forget:
Your ID, health card, and any hospital paperwork
Phone + charger (a long charging cord is extra handy)
Toiletries: toothbrush, face wipes, hairbrush, deodorant
A Doula’s Final Tip
Remember: the hospital will provide basics like diapers, pads, and even baby hats. Your bag doesn’t need to look like you’re moving in for a month. Focus on comfort, support, and the items that will help you feel most you during this important time.
